Gosaikunda Lake Trekking 

Gosaikunda lake trek lies north of Kathmandu and is third most popular trek of Nepal. It combines the high mountain lakes at Gosainkund ( Frozen lakes) and spectacular valley of Langtang .Visit the beautiful Langtang National park and then trek to the end of the valley to view the wonderful mountains views. Following the Trisuli River north out of Kathmandu, we travel through Trisuli Bazaar and Dhunche which located on ridge of the mountain and you will have wonderful view of Langtang range, Ganesh himal and Dorje Lakpa.

We start our first day walking steep ascend to Sing Gompa  through oak and rhododendron forests on our way. There is a high plateau, where the sacred lake Gosainkund is located. Crossing the Lauribenayak Pass (4610m./15213 ft.). There we are rewarded with the stunning views of the Manaslu, Ganesh Himal & even as far as the Annapurna massif.

Overall, This area offer crossing passes, Superb mountain view, beautiful Holy lake like Gosainkunda, picturesque Sherpa village, impressive display of wild flower, an abundance of wild life, Monasteries and of course friendly local people and their culture.

Suggested  Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu- Dhunche ( 1966m./6487ft.) 6 hours driving
We drive to Dhunche early morning . It is beautiful village to have Langtang Lirung, Ganesh himal and dhorje Lakpa and Langtang valley. Stay there overnight at lodge.
Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 2: Dhunche-Sing gompa/Chandanbari ( 3330m./10989ft.) 5 hours walk
We ascend to Sing Gompa . The view of mountain will be wider day by day. We will see Langtang range, Ganesh himal, Tibetan Monestary, once we reach at Sing Gompa. We walk through forest of Oak, hemlock and firs. We also will visit Local cheese factory there. We stay there overnight at lodge.

Day 3: Sing Gompa-  Lauribinayak ( 3850m./12705ft.) 4 hours walk
We ascend continue to Laurinayak today. It is beautiful walk through oak trees and better view of mountains. We walk shorter today to make sure for our climb to Gosainkunda for altitude mountains sickness and good mountains view with sunrise from Lauribinayak. You will see Langtang Lirung, Ganesh himal, Paldor peak, Dhoreje Lakpa, Manaslu, Annapurna range  in distance and panoramic picturesque of whole area in early morning. Stay there overnight at lodge.

Day 4:  Lauribinayak- Gosainkunda ( 4460m./14718ft.) 4 hours walking
We ascend steep to Lauribinayak pass (3950m./13035 ft.) and gradual walk to Gosainkunda. We would see a dozen of lakes there. Among them the main lakes are Sarawoti kunda, Bhairav kunda and Gosainda.  According to the legend, the Gosainkunda was created by hindu god Shiva when he pierced glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after having swallowed poison. So, the Gosainkunda is believed as holy lake and every year during July there will be Gosainkunda festival. Stay there overnight at lodge.

Day 5: Gosainkunda- Sing Gompa/Chandbari - Dhunche ( 1966m./6487ft.) 8 hours walk
We descend steep same way back to Sing Gompa and continue walk to Dhunche. Stay overnight at lodge.
Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner 

Day 6: Dhunche-Kathmandu ( 1400m./4620ft.) 6 hours driving
Drive to Kathmandu and transfer by to hotel.
Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch

Langtang National Park Fee
Langtang National park fee is cumpolsury to obtain to enter Gosaikunda trekking. You can obtain it in Nepal Tourism Board ( NTB) or government registered trekking agency as Nepal Alternative Treks or you also can pay directly at Dhunche . It costs NPR 3000 per person. You will need a passport copy and cash in Nepali rupees 3000 to obtain it. 

Trekker's information Management System ( TIMS)
TIMS is compulsory for Gosaikunda Lake Trekking. The main aim of TIMS has come into implementation from Jan.2008.  Trekking agency's association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal tour tourism board (NTB) has jointly recording the trekker's detail and issuing TIMS for trekkers.

TIMS can be applied through Government registered trekking agency as Nepal alternative treks. TIMS fees are NPR 2000 for individual trekkers and NPR 1000 for organized trekker. Individual TIMS has to be obtained at NTB in Kathmandu . You are required passport copy, one passport size photograph and the amount NPR 2000 for individual TIMS. You have to applied by Trekking agency if you are joined trekking agency and the amount is NPR 1000 for company joined in cash. It is included in our package. 

 

Trekking Clothing equipment

When you select your personal items, keep in mind the number of days you will be trekking, the time of year and the altitude. We advise our clients to bring these items:

- Lightweight walking boots "walked" them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters. 

- Light weight pants, shorts

- At night -track top, pants 

-  T-shirts. 

- Long sleeve shirt, if susceptible to sunburn. 

- Sun hat - sunburn is severe at rarefied altitudes. 

- Thick outer wooden socks, thin inner cotton 

- Vaseline for feet and crutch.

- Water bottle - 2 liters.

- Sunglasses and strap 

- Small headlamp/flashlight /torch

- Personal medical supplies - do not forget ban - aids, elastic bandage 

- Sunscreen, sun bock, sun - tan lotion. 

- Small daypack - 25 liters. 

- Rain jacket - poncho style to cover backpack. 

- Small towels 

- Warm down fiber filled jacket ( You can get on rent at Thamel) 

- Sleeping bag to -15c with inner sheet ( You can get on rent at Thamel) 

- Thermal underwear, woolen shirts and thick sweaters. 

- A pair of gloves 

- Snow glasses and strap

What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) ?

Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, usually above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters).

How do we know if I get AMS ?

Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. Symptoms are as below:

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Tiredness

  • Headache

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Rapid pulse (heart rate)

  • shortness of breath with exertion

  • Cannot walk in a straight line

Treatment 

  1. Rest, Rest , Rest

  2. Go down, down, down

  3. Diamox

Diamox may be given to help you breathe better. It can help reduce mild symptoms. This medicine can make you urinate more often. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug. This medication works best when taken before reaching a high altitude.

Prevention and pre-cautious 

Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include:

  • Climb the mountain gradually and slowly

  • Stop for a day or two of rest for every 2,000 feet (600 meters) above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters)

  • Sleep at a lower altitude when possible

  • Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness

  • Drink plenty of fluid – 3 liters per day

  • Avoid alcohol

  • Eat regular meals, high in carbohydrates

  • Sleep well

  • Be well equipped

First aid

Owing to a sudden change in climate, altitude and other factors, it is obvious that there could arise some alterations in your health. It would be hard to know all aspects of Nepal's health problems.You will be eating and drinking in various outlets. Diarrhea is a common illness that a tourist would be facing. So, it is recommended to drink purified water and eat in clean outlets. Drinking and eating precautions will surely help to take care of many health problems that could arise during the trip. Staying hydrated during the travel, trekking, tours is highly recommended too. If any problem should arise during the trip. Being on good health before leaving for a trip would help you to enjoy your trip to the fullest.Though Nepal alternative treks will be carrying first aid medical kid, you are also suggested to take personal basic first medicines for in case.

Accommodation

We will leave you free to choose hotel in Kathmandu as there will various choices to select yourself. We will arrange twin share basis room in lodges. We will provide shared washing room and toilet.

Meals

During our trek, we can enjoy authentic Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) at lodge. There will be served for breakfast, lunch and dinner three times along the route and most of the days Nepali national food " Dal Bhat " will be tested in route .

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Langtang Gosaikunda trek is an easy trek suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. As we will  get the highest elevation 4710 meter, you are preferred an excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly is good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Nepal alternative treks before booking the trek.
