Everest base camp trekking classical route

Everest Base Camp trek classical route is a longer version of trekking in the Everest region. This magnificent trekking commenced from a popular market place called Jiri 6-7 hours of drive from Kathmandu; which was originally the gateway of Everest- Khumbu region. This trekking route was indeed very popular in the early age of excursion. Even today, this trekking trail is famous for beautiful panorama of mid hill region, culture & tradition of different clique of people, rural lifestyle and best practice before taking ascend to the higher elevation.

This route is less crowded; most of the trekkers prefer to take a flight to Lukla and walk only the upper portion of the region. Everest trekking involves an incredible amount of up and down hill walking in a relatively lower elevation for first few days. It is the same trail which was chosen by legendary Sherpa Tenzing Norgey and Sir Edmond Hillary on their successful summit to the top of the world on 1953.

Once reaching Lukla, and until we return, we spend our time trekking through the heartland of the Sherpa people, staying in their villages, experiencing their cultures and visiting Buddhist monasteries. Our trek follows the Dudh Koshi River, and along its route you will see distant views of Everest and neighboring Ama Dablam, considered by many to be among the most beautiful mountains in Nepal. A rest day will be spent at Namche Bazaar, the busy market town in the heart of Sherpa country, and at Dingboche, a group of houses set among the high summer grazing pastures of the region. These rest days allow time to explore the surrounding areas and to acclimatize.  Those who have fully acclimatized may trek to the Everest Base Camp to view the famous Khumbu Icefall and see the numerous climbing groups preparing to climb Everest. However, without doubt, the highlight for most will be the early morning climb of Kala Pathar (5550 m/ 18315 ft). Standing on its peak, with the sun rising and Mt Pumori (7165 m/ 23644 ft) in the background, you will have a panoramic view of the Khumbu glacier, Everest Base Camp, Nuptse and the southwest face of Everest itself.

Leaving Gorak Shep, we spend the next few days Chola pass and Gokyo route down to Namche Bazaar. The trek will be equally exciting to summit Gokyo peak (5483m./18093 ft.) offering a fantastic panoramic view of Cho Oyo, Everest, Makalu etc. During traveling through Khumbu Himal, Gokyo valley and pass, one is rewarded with some of the most dramatic landscapes. The trek can be treated as one of the adventurous trek in the Himalayas as it follows the route via high pass into Khumbu i.e. Cho La pass at 5330m./17589ft. it is a very pleasant days walk to Lukla and your flight to Katmandu.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: Kathmandu- Jiri- Shivalaya- Phaplu- Junbesi ( 2675m./8827ft.) 8 hours driving
Today, your guide will pick you up from your hotel early morning for transportation to Phaplu by bus and drive continue local shared jeep to Junbesi. We stay overnigth at lodge .
Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner 

Day 2: Junbesi- Nhuntala ( 2200m./7260ft.) 6 hours walking
After leaving Junbesi in the morning we cross the Junbesi Khola (river) and then climb steeply uphill, contouring above the houses to the end of the ridge. From here we have excellent views of Everest, Thamserku , Kantega  and Mera Peak . This is the first view of Everest on this trek, although the lower peaks in the foreground seem to dwarf the higher, more distant mountains. After passing the Ringmo Khola , the trail ascends to Ringmo village, with its abundant fruit orchards. Beyond Ringmo we climb to the Trakshindu La pass (3071m./10134ft.), where we can see the isolated monastery of Takshindu, a superb example of Sherpa architecture. We now descent through forests of conifer and rhododendron, passing shepherd's huts and bhattis alongside the trail until we reach Nhuntala then stay there overnight at lodge.

Day 3: Nhuntala - Bupsa ( 2340m./7722ft.) 5 hours walking
From Nhuntala the descent continues to the Dudh Kosi (‘Milk River’) and cross this river using a 109m long suspension bridge. Our trek then climbs out of the river valley through fields of barley, wheat and corn to the sprawling Rai village of Jubing . We continue to climb up a ridge to a Sherpa village named Khari Khola . Beyond this village we climb past some water driven mills to Bupsa (2340m./7722ft.) 5 hours walking then stay there overnight at lodge .

Day 4: Bupsa - Phakding ( 2650m./8745ft.) 6 hours walking
Our trek today starts with a gentle climb, passing the village of Kharte and continues on through forests inhabited by monkeys. From this part of the trek we can admire views of Cho Oyu (8153m.26905ft.). We keep climbing the ridge till we reach the teashop on Khari la pass. From the pass, the trail descents into the deep canyon of Puiyan Khola. After crossing this river on a wooden bridge we reach the small settlement of Puiyan .The trail climbs up and down for about an hour after Puiyan to a ridge that offers a good view of the Khumbu region and then descents 500m towards Surkhe. Continuing our trail upwards again, we climb through a jumble of boulders, passing some wonderful Mani walls until we reach the village of Phakding then stay there overnight at lodge.

Day 5: Phakding-Namche Bazaar ( 3440m./11352ft.) 5 hours walk
After leaving Chablung we will cross the Tharo Kosi river on a local-style suspension bridge. Just past the bridge we can see the peak of Kusum Kangru (6367m./21011ft.), which is the most difficult of the so-called “trekking peaks”. Beyond the Tharo Kosi the trail climbs a bit towards Ghat, we will cross a ridge marked with painted mani stones and climb to Phakding. From Phakding we follow the valley of the Dudh Kosi river, staying on the west bank of the river. We climb steeply over a rocky ridge towards Benkar . From here the trail continues alongside the river. All along this part of the trail, villages are interspersed with magnificent forests of rhododendron, magnolia and giant firs. In both the early autumn and late spring, the flowers on this portion of the trek make it a beautiful walk. We cross the Kyashar Khola river and climb out of the valley to Manjo. Just beyond Manjo the trek enters the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park, which was established in 1976 to protect 1148 sq km area surrounding Mt Everest. Beyond the national park entrance station, the trail makes a steep rocky descent and crosses the Dhud Kosi river on a 120m-long suspension bridge towards Jorsale. After crossing this river a few times while climbing our way up the valley we will reach Namche Bazaar . Namche Bazaar is the main trading centre in this region and features numerous shops, hotels and restaurants. Stay there overnight at lodge .

Day 6: Acclimatization in Namche Bazaar
Namche Bazaar is tucked away between two ridges amongst the giant peaks of the Khumbu. Once named the 'Trekkers Mecca of Nepal’, Namche now boasts plenty of lodges and souvenir shops. It is an ideal place to spend a rest day, acclimatizing to the new altitude  before heading off towards Everest Base Camp. Options for acclimatization walks include a visit to Khumjung Village and Khumjung gompa which has a Yeti skull,  and also the one hour walk up to the Everest Hotel (3850m./12705ft.) above Namche for the sunset view of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse and Everest. Stay at same Lodge.

Day 7: Namche Bazaar - Tyangboche ( 3850m./12705ft.) 5 hours walk
The trail contours around the side of the valley, high above the Dudh Kosi. Now we get our first really good views of the great peaks - Khumbu, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam, including Everest. Passing by several villages and numerous tea shops, we descend steeply to a bridge over the river at Phunki Tenga. The village is an excellent lunch spot, and here we can rest before making the steep climb to Tengboche. Although tiring, the hike up the zigzag path has numerous distractions, with rhododendron bushes, beautiful birds and superb mountain scenery. Tengboche is famous for its legendary monastery, the largest in the Khumbu. We stay near the monastery with Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam framed in the doorway of our lodge. It takes 5 hours walking from Namche to Tengboche then stay overnight there at lodge.

Day 8: Tyangboche - Dingboche ( 4560m./15048ft.) 5 hours walk
The trail leads past the tiny village of Devuche, crosses the Imja Khola  and, after passing beautifully carved mani stones and a few chortens, we reach Pangboche. Ama Dablam dominates the skyline as we make our way to the village of Dingboche where we stay for two nights at a lodge.

Day 9: Dingboche- Lobuche ( 4900m./16170ft.) 5 hhours walk
We continue up the wide valley beneath the impressive peaks of Cholatse and Tawache on the left. We then turn right and climb more steeply towards the foot of the Khumbu Glacier and Lobuche east peak. At the top of this climb, there are many stone Pyramids, built as memorials to the many Sherpas who have died while climbing Mt Everest. The path then climbs gently along the glacier, to eventually reach the cluster of houses at Lobuche. Stay overnight at lodge.

Day 10:  Lobuche- Gorak Shep ( 5130m./16929ft.) 2 hours walk
We continue our trek along the Khumbu Glacier in the early morning for a  wonderful walk to the Everest Base Camp (5364m./17701ft.). Trek to Gorak Shep where we leave our bags at the Lodge. After lunch, we hike for two hours up the Khumbu Glacier to the EBC. After spending time viewing the famous Khubu Icefall and wandering through the ‘village’ of climbing groups, we return to Gorak Shep and stay overnight at lodge .

Day 11: Gorak Shep - Kallapathar- Pheriche ( 4250m./14025ft.) 6 hours walk
We rise very early in the morning for the hike to Kala Pattar (5550m./18315ft.) Our objective is to reach the summit of Kala Pattar just as the sun rises. After 2 hours of hiking, you will stand on Kala Pattar, just beneath Pumori (7165 m/23644 ft). From here, you have an unobstructed view of the Everest south face, Nuptse and many other peaks.  The scenery is breathtaking and you will want to extend your stay as long  as possible to take picture after picture and enjoy the vast array of mountains that surround you. And, at some moment while you stand looking out over the scene below, you will realize the significance of your achievement and the great feeling of satisfaction of a job well done. Soon, however, we have to leave Kala Pattar and make our way back to Gorak Shep,  then trek down to pheriche  and  stay overnight at lodge.

Day 12:  Pheriche- Tyangboche- Namche ( 3440m./11352ft.) 6 hours walk
Our trek takes us downhill  to Tyangboche and the Dudh Kosi river. We cross the river and make our way through Phortse Thanga and from there, after many steep switchbacks uphill. Again, the views from this elevation are outstanding as you look down the valleys to the west and admire the surrounding peaks. We descend and pass through Kenjoma on our way to Namche Bazzar and stay overnight at lodge.

Day 13: Namche Bazaar - Lukla ( 2800m./9240ft.) 6 hours walking
From Namche Bazaar the trail descends steeply to the village of Jorsale. Passing the villages of Phakding and Choplung, we reach Chaunrikharka and the trail that leads up to the airport at Lukla. This is a long, but pleasant day of trekking and after  6 hours of walking you will be glad to reach the lodge in Lukla! This will be the final day of your trek and an opportunity to gather with your comrades, guides and porters to celebrate your achievement! Enjoy your last evening in the Khumbu region by relaxing at the lodge.

Day 14:  Lukla - Kathmandu ( 22 minutes ) flight 
In the morning, we rise early for breakfast, then walk to the airport. Before boarding the flight to Katmandu, you say goodbye to the porters and also goodbye to the mountains. The plane rolls down the short runway, then soars across the Dudh Kosi River and makes its way back to Katmandu. Transfer to hotel.

Sagarmatha National Park fee

Sagarmatha National park is determined as the world heritage site by UNESCO. It’s main aim is to protect the wild life, flora and fauna in Everest region. We can find there himalayan tahr, ghoral, musk deer, pika (mouse hare), weasel, jackal, black bear, wolf, lynx and snow leopard. 193 species of birds including impeyan pheasant (Danphe), blood pheasant, red-billed chough, yellow-billed chough, snow cock, snow pigeon, Himalayan griffon and lammergeyer birds are found in this national park area.  As the vegetation, pine and hemlock forests at lower altitudes, while above 3,500 m, forests are dominated by silver fir, birch, rhododendron and juniper trees . Entrance fees are fixed for SAARC nationals - NPR 1,700 per person per entry, foreigners - NPR. 3,300 per person per entry. Trekkers can apply to obtain it in Nepal tourism board ( NTB) or government registered company as Nepal alternative treks and in entry point at Manju. You are required to bring your passport copy, one passport sized pictures and fee in cash. 

Local Government Tax

Local government tax is collecting at Lukla by Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality after local government is formed. You will have to pay NPR 2000.00 per person at Lukla directly. Passport copy is required to obtain.

Trekking Clothing equipment

When you select your personal items, keep in mind the number of days you will be trekking, the time of year and the altitude. We advise our clients to bring these items:

- Lightweight walking boots "walked" them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters. 

- Light weight pants, shorts

- At night -track top, pants 

-  T-shirts. 

- Long sleeve shirt, if susceptible to sunburn. 

- Sun hat - sunburn is severe at rarefied altitudes. 

- Thick outer wooden socks, thin inner cotton 

- Vaseline for feet and crutch.

- Water bottle - 2 liters.

- Sunglasses and strap 

- Small headlamp/flashlight /torch

- Personal medical supplies - do not forget ban - aids, elastic bandage 

- Sunscreen, sun bock, sun - tan lotion. 

- Small daypack - 25 liters. 

- Rain jacket - poncho style to cover backpack.

- Sleeping bag to -15c with inner sheet ( You can get on rent at Thamel)

What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) ?

Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, usually above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters).

How do we know if I get AMS ?

Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. Symptoms are as below:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse (heart rate)
  • shortness of breath with exertion
  • Cannot walk in a straight line

Diamox may be given to help you breathe better. It can help reduce mild symptoms. This medicine can make you urinate more often. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug. This medication works best when taken before reaching a high altitude.

Prevention and pre-cautious 

Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include:

  • Climb the mountain gradually and slowly
  • Stop for a day or two of rest for every 2,000 feet (600 meters) above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters)
  • Sleep at a lower altitude when possible
  • Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness
  • Drink plenty of fluid – 3 liters per day
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Eat regular meals, high in carbohydrates
  • Sleep well
  • Be well equipped

First aid

Owing to a sudden change in climate, altitude and other factors, it is obvious that there could arise some alterations in your health. It would be hard to know all aspects of Nepal's health problems.You will be eating and drinking in various outlets. Diarrhea is a common illness that a tourist would be facing. So, it is recommended to drink purified water and eat in clean outlets. Drinking and eating precautions will surely help to take care of many health problems that could arise during the trip. Staying hydrated during the travel, trekking, tours is highly recommended too. If any problem should arise during the trip. Being on good health before leaving for a trip would help you to enjoy your trip to the fullest.Though Nepal alternative treks will be carrying first aid medical kid, you are also suggested to take personal basic first medicines for in case.


We will leave you free to choose hotel in Kathmandu as there will various choices to select yourself. We will arrange twin share basis room in lodges during the trek. We will arrange shared washing room and toilet.


During our trek, we can enjoy authentic Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) during the trek. There will be served breakfast, lunch and dinner three times along the route on your own choice from MENU .

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Everest base camp long route is medium type of trek, Suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. As we will  get the highest elevation 5545 meter, you are preferred an excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly is good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Nepal alternative treks before booking the trek.
