Panch Pokhari Trekking
Panch Pokhari is named after five holy ponds of great religious significance in the north-eastern part of Singhupalchowk district. Panch pokhari is one of the new and virgin trekking destination in Nepal. Panch Pokhari is situated at an elevation of 4100 m above sea level. This is a famous hindu pilgrimage site in Nepal. This trekking lies to the north of the Kathmandu valley, the chain of peaks called Jugal himal that includes Dorje Lakpa ( 6966m), Madiya ( 6257m) and Phurbi Chhyachhu ( 6637 m).
This trek offers pristine mountain views, rich culture and genuine adventure. This area offers a combination of rich cultural heritage, unsurpassed beauty and biological diversity as you trek to a group of high altitude holy lakes, sacred to both Buddhist and Hindu people.
This trek starts from 1,450m and goes up to 4,100m at Panch Pokhari, a secluded pilgrimage site where the Janaipurnima festival is held in August. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimages visit this site each year. This is a very spectacular and spiritual trek.
The top of Panch Pokhari (4,100m) offers an excellent view of Jugal Himal Range, Rolwaling Range,Gosainkund, Kanchenjunga and Makalu.
This trek can be done all year round except for the monsoon months and can be combined with a rafting tour.

Day 1: Kathmandu -Chautara - Bhotang ( 2300m./7590ft.) 8 hours drive
This morning we have a beautiful 5 hour drive to the little village of Chautara. Chautara is the headquarter of Sindupalchok district then drive continue to Bhotang another 3 hours . We stay overnight there at camp.

Day 2: Bhotang- Hille Bhanjyang (3400m./11220ft.) 5 hours walk
This morning we have a steep uphill stetch for about 3 hours, taking our time. We get our breath back on the steep downhill though as we descend for 2 hours through the forest. We have some great mountain views on our way down into our camp at Hille Bhanjyang. We stay overnight at tent.

Day 3: Hille Bhanjyang- Narsim Pati (3700m./12210ft.) 7 hours walk
Today we only have about 4 hours of walking. So we take it easy on the steep uphill section to start the day, taking about an hour. Then we enjoy the gradual descent of about 3 hours through rocky hills and rhododendron forest into camp at Narsim Pati. There is a small rest house for pilgrims on their way to the holy site of Panch Pokhari and we have great mountain views from our campsite. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 4: Narsim pati- Panch Pokhari (4100m./13530ft.) 4 hours walk
Today we arrive! We have about 4 hours of gradual ascent through rocky hills to reach our destination of Panch Pokhari (panch means ‘five’ and pokhari means ‘lake’). This stunning setting is a secluded pilgrimage site where the Janaipurnima festival is held in August. Many Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims visit this site each year and we can see two pilgrim houses and the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. We stay overnight at tent .

Day 5: Panch Pokhari-Tupi Danda (2320m./7656ft.) 6 hours walk
This morning we have an early start to catch a stunning sunrise over the mountains! We have about 1 hour uphill to see the beautiful sight of the sun rising over the Himalayas and our panoramic view includes Mt.Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal Range, Rolwaling Range and Langtang Range. After this incredible start to the morning, we head back down to Panch Pokhari to pack up and start heading for home. We have about 5 hours down some steep trails through the rhododendron forest to Tupi Danda (danda means ‘ridge’) and our camp. We stay there overnight on tent .

Day 6: Tupi Danda-Dhap (1200m./3960ft.) 5 hours walk
Today we have about 5 hours of walking, 2 of which are quite steep downhill and the rest is quite level as we make our way through terraced fields to the beautiful village of Dhap. Dhap is home to Tamang families and is gives us a great chance to gain some insight into the lives, culture and traditional architecture of Tamang villages. We stay overnight at tent .

Day 7: Rest day and explore the culture
Explore around to experience and ovserve local culture.

Day 8: Dhap- Melamchi (800m./2640ft.) 6 hours walk
Today we have about 6 hours of walking. We walk down through terraced fields, along the Indrawati River. We pass through stunning villages and also see a hydro electricity project on the way to Tipini and our re-introduction to a road! Melamchi Pul Bazaar which lies at the bank of Melamchi Khola (stream) and Indrawati River is comparatively a big town for this area. There are some lodges, tea shops, government offices, schools, colleges, post office and army police camp. We will camp by the riverside and if you like you can refresh yourself with a dip in the river! We stay overnight there at hotel. Meals included : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 9: Melamchi - Kathmandu ( 1400m./4620ft.) 5 hours drive
Today, we get back on four wheels and enjoy our five hour scenic drive back to Kathmandu. Transfer to your hotel.

When you select your personal items, keep in mind the number of days you will be trekking, the time of year and the altitude. We advise our clients to bring these items:
- Lightweight walking boots "walked" them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters.

- At night -track top, pants
- T-shirts.
- Long sleeve shirt, if susceptible to sunburn.

What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) ?
Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, usually above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters).
How do we know if I get AMS ?
Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. Symptoms are as below:

Diamox may be given to help you breathe better. It can help reduce mild symptoms. This medicine can make you urinate more often. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug. This medication works best when taken before reaching a high altitude.

Owing to a sudden change in climate, altitude and other factors, it is obvious that there could arise some alterations in your health. It would be hard to know all aspects of Nepal's health problems.You will be eating and drinking in various outlets. Diarrhea is a common illness that a tourist would be facing. So, it is recommended to drink purified water and eat in clean outlets. Drinking and eating precautions will surely help to take care of many health problems that could arise during the trip. Staying hydrated during the travel, trekking, tours is highly recommended too. If any problem should arise during the trip. Being on good health before leaving for a trip would help you to enjoy your trip to the fullest.Though Nepal alternative treks will be carrying first aid medical kid, you are also suggested to take personal basic first medicines for in case. Accommodation We will leave you free to choose hotel in Kathmandu as there will various choices to select yourself. We will arrange two men tents in pass during the trek. We will provide shared washing room and toilet. Meals During our trek, we can enjoy authentic Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) at lodges and our cook will prepare food along the pass. There will be served for breakfast, lunch and dinner three times along the route on your choice and most of the days Nepali national food " Dal Bhat " will be tested in route . Physical Condition & Experience Requirements Panchpokhari Trekking is hard trek suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. As we will get the highest elevation 4350 meter, you are preferred an excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly is good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Nepal alternative treks before booking the trek. |
