Why is it better to take guide and porter from Pokhara ?

Nepal alternative treks is promoting and supporting local people for sustainable tourism development in Annapurna region. We have recently contracted with local guides and porters at Pokhara which is main starting point for Annapurna trekking. It is benefits for both trekkers and local people. Trekkers won’t have to pay any transportation from Kathmandu to Pokhara and return as well food and salary for guide porter during travel. Just compensate them while they really work for you! You can save two days expenses of guide and porters for traveling from Kathmandu and return. 

Are guides government registered license holder and experienced? 

Our local guides are first aid trained, government registered license holder, fluent English and Local language speaking, informative about destination and general knowledge of Nepal, Knowledgeable of local culture, local people, local tradition, religion, culture and people’s life style. 

How much guide costs and what does it includes?

We offer the best price for guide is only US $ 30 per day. It includes their all meals, accommodation, salary, equipments, insurance, government tax and service charge.

What is difference between guide and guide cum porter ? 

We suggest hiring guide cum porter for individual clients to get support of carrying some of your luggage and guiding by same person. Guide cum porter helps you to carry about 10 kg., English speaking, experienced and offer at lower price.

How much guide cum porter cost and what does it include? 

We offer guide cum porter is only US $ 25 per day. It includes all their meals, accommodation, wage, equipment and insurance. 

We request you to bring a back pack ( normally 60-70 liter recommended )  that fits your belongings which should be maximum 10 kg then he will manage his own bag there too. 

Need porter ? 

Our porters are very strong, honest, well equipped and experienced. We are specializing guide porters in Annapurna region for better information and knowledge.

Porter cost and includes? 

We offer the cost for porter is only US $ 20 per day.  It includes all their meals, accommodation, wage, equipment and insurance. 

How much porter can carry and how does he carry my luggage ?

Porter's weight limit is 25 kg but he won't mind to carry 2-3 kg more or less.  Company will provide duffle bag to carry your luggage but if you have your own rucksack then it will be good too. 

What happened if guide/porter got accident or got sick along the trekking ? 

Our guide/porters have fully insurance for medical, accidental or helicopter rescue coverage. We will manage it. 

How to meet your guide/porters at Pokhara ?

Our guide/porter will come to meet you at the hotel at your favorable time. We will give him your name and hotel detail to find you. You can discuss about next day's plan and brief about the trip with him and meet next morning for departure to trekking. We will also provide you his phone number to contact yourself. 

Why should we take guide/porter?

You are highly suggested to take either guide/guide cum porter or porter for this trekking for four important reasons as below:

  1. You will get authentic and full information about the trip.
  2. You will not miss the trail.
  3. You can book the rooms in advance via phone or send him earlier.
  4. You can get his assistance for communicating to local people or us for any urgency if you get high altitude sick or accident along the trekking. 

Which treks can start  and hire guide/porter from Pokhara ?

We have been arranging local trekking guides. Guide cum porter and porter from Pokhara to  Poon hill Trekking,  Annapurna Base Camp Trekking, Jomsom Trekking, Mohare Danda Trekking, Mardi himal Trekking, Dhampus Sarangkot Hiking and any trip that you customize.  

How do we arrange our luggage for porter to carry ?

If you are hiring a porter just for you as private then bring a 40- 50 liter ruck sack for a porter to carry but if you are sharing porter with another person then you will need to arrange 70- 80  liter ruck sack. 

Is any permit necessary for this trek ? And how do we proceed ?
Yes, you are required Annapurna Conservation Area Project ( ACAP ) and Trekker's information Management system ( TIMS ) to allow legally entry this area. ACAP costs NPR. 3000 per person. You can obtain ACAP permit through Nepal Tourism Board ( NTB ) in Kathmandu or Pokhara directly yourself or through government registered trekking company as Nepal Alternative treks. You are required passport copy, two passport size pictures and cash in Nepali rupees. You have to obtain Group TIMS through agency while you take guide/porter from us. It costs NPR. 1000 per person and required 1  passport copy and cash in Nepali rupees NPR. It costs NPR 2000 per person if you trek without guide/porter which is called individual TIMS.

If you trek to upper Mustang then you have to hire a government registered trekking guide to obtain permit and get allow to entry. Permit cost is $ 500 per person for 10 days minimum then $ 50 for extra per day. Department of immigration, Nepal allow only government registered company to proceed permit for this area. You are not required TIMS for Upper mustang and not required ACAP and TIMS for Dhampus- Sarangkot and Mohare Danda Trekking. 

 

Trekking Clothing equipment 

When you select your personal items, keep in mind the number of days you will be trekking, the time of year and the altitude. We advise our clients to bring these items:

- Lightweight walking boots "walked" them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters. 

- Light weight pants, shorts

- At night -track top, pants 

-  T-shirts. 

- Long sleeve shirt, if susceptible to sunburn. 

- Sun hat - sunburn is severe at rarefied altitudes. 

- Thick outer wooden socks, thin inner cotton 

- Vaseline for feet and crutch.

- Water bottle - 2 liters.

- Sunglasses and strap 

- Small headlamp/flashlight /torch

- Personal medical supplies - do not forget ban - aids, elastic bandage 

- Sunscreen, sun bock, sun - tan lotion. 

- Small daypack - 25 liters. 

- Wind proof jacket  and rain jacket - poncho style to cover backpack. 

- Small towels 

- Warm down fiber filled jacket ( You can get on rent at Thamel) 

- Sleeping bag to -15c with inner sheet ( You can get on rent at Thamel) 

- Thermal underwear, woolen shirts and thick sweaters. 

- A pair of gloves

What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) ?

Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, usually above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). The highest point is Thorong la pass which is elevated at 5416 meter. If you be precautious about high altitude and follow our guide then you can avoid it. 

How do we know if we get AMS ?

Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. Symptoms are as below:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse (heart rate)
  • shortness of breath with exertion
  • Cannot walk in a straight line

Treatment 

  1. Rest, Rest , Rest
  2. Go down, down, down
  3. Diamox

Diamox may be given to help you breathe better. It can help reduce mild symptoms. This medicine can make you urinate more often. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug. This medication works best when taken before reaching a high altitude.

Prevention and pre-cautious 

Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include:

  • Climb the mountain gradually and slowly
  • Sleep at a lower altitude when possible
  • Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness
  • Drink plenty of fluid – 3 liters per day
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Eat regular meals, high in carbohydrates
  • Sleep well
  • Be well equipped

First aid

Owing to a sudden change in climate, altitude and other factors, it is obvious that there could arise some alterations in your health. It would be hard to know all aspects of Nepal's health problems.You will be eating and drinking in various outlets. Diarrhea is a common illness that a tourist would be facing. So, it is recommended to drink purified water and eat in clean outlets. Drinking and eating precautions will surely help to take care of many health problems that could arise during the trip. Staying hydrated during the travel, trekking, tours is highly recommended too. If any problem should arise during the trip. Being on good health before leaving for a trip would help you to enjoy your trip to the fullest.Though Nepal alternative treks will be carrying first aid medical kid, you are also suggested to take personal basic first medicines for in case.

Accommodation

There are available lodges everywhere during the trek. You are suggested to book in advance through guide some places during high season to secure room for you. 

Meals

During our trek, You can enjoy authentic Nepalese food as well the more common international cuisine (Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, etc.) in lodges. Threre will be served breakfast, lunch and dinner three times along the route on your choice from MENU but they strictly restrict to eat oustside and cook food in thier kitchen. 

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

All the trekking routes are moderate level of trek in this region,  suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. You are preferred an excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly is good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Nepal alternative treks before booking the trek.
