Ghorepani Muktinath Filming Trek

This filming trek is situated on north of Pokhara, Nepal's stunning diversity appears at its finest. The deep valleys and high mountains encircling the giant Annapurna Himal embrace a wide range of people and terrain, from subtropical jungle to a high, dry landscape resembling the Tibetan Plateau. This is the most popular trekking region, attracting over 75% of all trekkers (more than 30.000 annually). It's also among the tamest areas, with excellent lodges lining the main routes. The scenery and culture are top-notch and you can avoid the peak-season crush and still get fine weather and views. The views of the mountains are spectacular and the route actually crosses to the other side of the main Himalayan range for some curious views of the northern flanks.

This region includes the world's deepest gorge of the Kali Gandaki River.  The trek reaching the maximum altitude of 3800m (12,464 ft) and can be completed by anybody with a moderate level of fitness. Continuing along the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, marvel at the splendid peaks of Annapurna-I and Dhaulagiri both of which reach heights in excess of 8000m (26,240 ft). Explore the hundreds of years old monastery, caves, local tribes and scenic beauties of the different landscapes. Make an adventure starting from world's deepest gorge Kali Gandaki Region into world's highest regions passing through an almost tree-less barren landscape, a steep rocky trail up and down hill and panoramic views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and several other peaks.

The initial days of the trek through the Annapurna region ascends through rice terraces and villages inhabited by the indigenous people, mostly the Gurungs. The trek gets interesting in Tatopani where you will have the opportunity to relax in natural hot springs! Then the trek passes through Jomsom and Kagbeni, the entry point of upper Mustang Region. The grandeur of the Dhaulagiri Glacier is on show a little further up along with the first glimpse of the windy Tibetan Plateau on the way to the holy Hindu pilgrimage site of Muktinath (3800m/12,464 ft). The sacred temple has 108 waterfalls that resemble water flowing from taps and mysterious natural gas fires that boggle the mind. From here it is downhill to Jomsom village on the Tibetan Plateau where you can look around at the gateway to the "Forbidden Kingdom of Mustang", and get a glimpse of the ancient traditions still in practice. A flight the following day will bring you to Pokhara.

Birethanti

Birethanti is a small village set at the foot of the Modi Khola Valley at around 1,100 metres.

It still has many small tea shops and souvenir sellers, even though it is not the thriving trekkers' centre it once was.

A wander round it will reveal the lives of the local people and you may well see the mule trains being driven from here up the valley, supplying less well connected villages with goods. If you walk 5 minutes uphill on the way to Ulleri, you will see beautiful water fall and swimming at spring.

Extending over an altitude from 2,620 to 2,660 m, Banthanti lies in ward No. 8 of Ghandruk VDC. Banthanti, situated on the banks of the Mutlun River, served almost like a commercial hub in ancient times. Since the Indian borders were sealed, Banthanti developed as the focal point for people from different rural areas of Kaski district on their travel to Tibet for salt. In those days, the people who went to Tibet with empty dokos (bamboo baskets carried on the back with head and shoulder strap support) and returned with salt were called ‘Dhakres’ (porters). The throng of people going to and returning from Tibet with salt gave a festive like air to Banthanti, yet they had to spend their nights under the trees.

Old folks recall how the place came to be called Banthanti after the great grandfather of Subedar Briddi Bahadur Gurung of Mukhiyakhal, having been moved by the plight of the salt porters, built a thanti (open resthouse or shed) some 100 years ago.

Ghandruk

Ghandruk village is the popular trekking in Annapurna region. Enjoy trekking in the spectacular mountain scenery through charming villages inhabited by the Gurungs, dense rhododendron forests full of birds and deep sub-tropical valleys, all set below the Annapurna with the picturesque peak of Machhapuchhare (Fish Tail) dominating the skyline. As the sun touches the snow-capped summits the Himalayan giants, Dhaulagiri (8167m) and Annapurna (8091m) along with a maze of other peaks, slowly begin to appear, like magic, before our eyes. Exploring around the Ghandruk village, you will find Gurung people’s lifestyle, their culture, museum,  terraces, temple, monastery, traditional villages, typical houses and traditional foods.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3: Ghandruk-Tadapani ( 2650m./8745ft.) 5 hrs. walk

Trek to Tadapani then stay there overnight at lodge .

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Highlights of this day

Today, you will walk through the forest where you might encounter various spices of birds, wild animals and pleasant walk.

Tadapani

Tadapani (2630m) is the main stopping point for trekkers between Ghorepani and Chhomrong. The trail opens up here and when the skies are clear the views of Annapurna South and Fish Tail are Fantastic. The village hosts a small shop to buy goods.

Tadapani lies in ward No. 8 of Ghandruk VDC, a three-hour brisk walk from Sitge of Ghandruk. Tadapani, on the Ghandruk-Ghorepani trekking trail, is reached after an uphill climb from Bhainsikharka and then a walk through the dense rhododendron forests.

There are seven hotels with modern amenities at Tadapani, which is situated at an altitude of 2,650 m. It was Deu Bahadur Gurung who first started a hotel at Tadapani by fencing a house with bamboo strips in 2036 B.S. He had named his hotel ‘Annapurna’. Tadapani affords unobstructed views of the Annapurna Himalayan range just above it. Besides, one can also savor panoramic views of the Machhapuchhre peak, the Modi Khola River flowing at the foothills, and places like Uri Gaon Ghujung, Ghanuwa from here. During the months of March and April, the blooming rhododendron flowers are a compelling attraction.

In olden times during the days of the forefathers, there was the tradition of keeping herds of cows. The place thus derived its name ‘Thulo Konwar’ owing to its many cow sheds. But in more recent times, as tourist arrivals increased, they came in groups and camped at Tadapani. Since water was not available here, people walked for hours to fetch water from the Chhaldau River. As people had to walk long distances to fetch drinking water, the tourists aptly named the place ‘Tadapani’ meaning ‘water afar’. The water problem has now been solved. Presently, hotels with modern amenities such as the Annapurna, Panorama Point, Tadapani Super View, Fishtail and Himalaya cater to the tourists.

Highlights of the day

Muktinath is an important pilgrimage place for both Hindus and Buddhists. You will Visit Vishnu Temple, natural flame, 108 holy taps and Gompa.

Muktinath temple

Situated at an altitude of 3,710 meters (12,172 feet) at the base of the Thorong La mountain pass in the Mustang district, Muktinath is a highly venerated sacred place for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Hindus call the site Mukti Kshetra, which literally means the "place of salvation" and it is one of the most ancient temples of the God Vishnu and the Vaishnava tradition in Nepal. The shrine is considered to be one of the eight sacred places known as Svayam Vyakta Ksetras (the other seven being Srirangam, Srimushnam, Tirupati, Naimisharanya, Totadri, Pushkar and Badrinath), as well as one of the 108 Divya Desam, or holy places of worship of Lord Vishnu. Additionally, it is also one of the 51 Shakti Pitha goddess sites.

The temple is small and contains a human-sized golden statue of Vishnu as Shri Mukti Narayana. In addition to Mukti Narayana, the temple has bronze images of Bhoodevi (the Earth-goddess form of Lakshmi), the goddesses Saraswati and Janaki (Sita), Garuda (the mount of Vishnu), Lava-Kusa (the sons of Rama and Sita) and the Sapta Rishis (Seven Sages created by Lord Brahma). There is an old Buddhist monk present in the temple and worship is conducted by Buddhist nuns.

Behind the temple is a semi-circular wall with 108 stone faucets at a height of seven feet. The faucets all have the same shape of the head of a bull and are separated by approximately one foot. Water from the ice-cold Kali Gantaki River has been diverted to flow through the mouths of these bulls and hardy pilgrims who visit the temple often stand beneath each of the spouts.

The number 108 carries great significance in Eastern philosophy. In Hindu astrology, there are 12 zodiac or Rashi and 9 planets or Graha, giving a total of 108 combinations. Also there are 27 Lunar mansions or Nakshatras, which are divided in 4 quarters, or Padas each giving a combination of 108 Padas in total.

The Kali Gantaki riverbed downstream from Muktinath is the sole source of the rare Shaligram stones that are required to establish a temple of Vishnu anywhere in the world.

Buddhists call Muktinath Chumming Gyatsa, which in Tibetan means 'Hundred Waters'. According to Tibetan Buddhism Chumig Gyatsa is a sacred place of the Dakinis goddesses known as Sky Dancers, and also one of the 24 celebrated Tantric places. Additionally, the site is believed to be a manifestation of Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and Virtue. The Tibetan Buddhist tradition states that Guru Rimpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism, meditated here on his way to Tibet.

After completing prayers and worship at the Muktinath temple many pilgrims, both Hindu and Buddhist, visit Mebar Lha Gomba, the small monastery of `miraculous fire', which is situated near the entrance gate of the temple. This monastery, dedicated to Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) and containing a statue of the Buddhist deity Chenrezig (Avalokitesvara), is famous for its continuously burning natural gas fire, which Hindus worship as Jwala Mai, the Goddess of Fire.

Day 10: Muktinath-Ekle bhatti-Jomsom
