Dhaulagiri round trekking is one of the most adventerous trekking destinations  and remote area in Nepal. Dhaulagiri treks also popular as French pass trekking in Dhaulagiri region traverses the head of hidden valley trek by crossing glaciated French pass (5240 m.) and Thapa pass (5250 m.). Suggested Itinerary 

Day 1: Kathmandu-Pokhara-Beni by Overland ( 850m./2805 ft.) 8 hours drive
Departure early morning at 7:00 a.m to Pokhara by tourist bus 6 hours driving. Drive continue private vehicle to Beni ( 850m./28050ft.) another 3 hours then stay there overnight at tent.

Day 2 :Beni- Babiachor- Takam ( 1500m./4950ft.) 6 hours driving
This days the drive begins heads west along the north bank of the Marshyangdi Khola through the village of Beni Mangalghat to Singa and Tatopani (hot springs). We stay at Takam overnight at tent .

Day 3: Takam- Muri ( 1850m./6105ft.) 6 hours walk
This day, After crossing the river to its West Bank as you leave Phedi the trail starts climbing in earnest and there will be many switch-backs until you arrive at the ridge and the angle of ascent eases. Again the trail climbs steeply to the villages of Muri. Continue your trek to Sibang and Mattim. From here you continue up an incline to the snout of the ridge, descend to the Gatti Khola and reach Phalai Gaon. Cross the Dhara Khola to once again emerge on the west bank of the Myagdi Khola and then climb a ridge to the large Magar village of Muri then stay there overnight at tent.

Day 4: Muri- Boghara ( 2080m./6864ft.) 5 hours walk
Descend a little, cross a stream and continue through terraced fields before climbing a ridge to reach the pass from where you can see Mt. Ghustung South (6465 meters). Descend to the Myagdi Khola and trek along its West Bank to the village of Naura from where you will climb a little before traversing a grassy hill and climbing a steep slope with switch-backs, then descend through a forest and terraced fields to Boghara then stay  there overnight at tent.

Day 5: Boghara-Dobang ( 2520m./8316ft.) 5 hours walk
We walk to Dobang. This day we begin to walk  through terraced fields to a small ridge, then through a forest to Jyardan which is the most remote permanent settlement in this part. After the settlement a high winding path crosses a rocky area which then descends before climbing again to Lipshe where there is on single hut. The trail continues through a forest to Lapche Kharka and then climbs to the level area at Dobang. We stay there overnight at tent .

Day 6: Dobang- Choriban Khola ( 3110m./10263ft.) 5 hours walk
We trek to Choriban Khola . After crossing a wooden bridge out of Dobang the trail ascends a forested area. Soon the west face of Dhaulagiri I (8167 meters) becomes visible through breaks in the trees. Descend to the Myagdi Khola and cross via a wooden bridge to the east bank continue to Chartare. Passing through forests again, you cut across a rocky area and cross a stream to Choriban Khola. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 7: Choriban- Italian Base Camp ( 3660m./12078ft.) 6 hours walk
The trail leads us to Italian Base Camp. This day the trail to the terminal moraine of the Chhonbarban Glacier and enter the glacier from the right. Tukche Peak (6837 meters) becomes visible straight on; at the far end while the impressive north flank of Dhaulagiri I (8167 meters) dominates the skyline to your right. After a short while you will reach Italian Base Camp (3660 meters). To the west are the peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7751meters), Dhaulagiri III (7715 meters) and Dhaulagiri V (7618 meters) can be seen. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 8:Acclimatization or rest day.
We take a rest day for Acclimatization to make sure and confidence for reaching our destination. We stay at same place at tent .

Day 9: Italian Base Camp-Glacier Camp ( 4210m./13893ft.) 6 hours walk
We trek to Glacier Camp. This day, Early in the morning when the weather is expected to be clear, This Trail is prone to stone fall, which passes through a narrow gorge. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 10: Glacier Camp- Dhaulagiri Base Camp ( 4740m./15642ft.) 6 hours walk
This day, This is one of our adventurous days to Dhaulagiri base camp. From here you can look up at the impressive north face of Dhaulagiri I (8167 meters) dominating the skyline to your right. To the west are peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7751meters), Dhaulagiri III (7715 meters) and Dhaulagiri V (7618 meters). In front of you is the impressive icefall that descends from the north east col. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 11: Acclimatization  
We take another acclimatization day for the pass. Stay at same tent .

Day 12: Cross French Pass then trek to Hidden Valley ( 5200m./17160ft.) 6 hours walk
We walk today to Hidden valley. This day form North east col, we climb two terraced hills, the first of which runs along the glacier, then cutts across the mountain flank and the moraine you enter a gentle incline on the left from an ablation valley. Climb this gentle slope to the French Pass (5360m./17688ft.). A great vista opens up from the French Pass and you will be able to see Mukut Himal (6328 meters), Tashi Kang (6386 meters) and Sita Chuchura (6611 meters), all of which surround the Hidden Valley. To the south is Tukche Peak (6920 meters) and beyond is the massive peak of Dhaulagiri I. From French Pass you continue along the right edge of the Hidden valley losing a little altitude to Thapa Pass (5250meters) between Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6,012 meters). Descending from Thapa Pass you will make it to camp at Hidden Valley then stay there overnight at tent.

Day 13: Hidden Valley- Dhampus Pass -Yak Kharka ( 3680m./12144ft.) 6 hours walk
Descend from the hidden valley to the Dhampus Pass (5200m./17160ft.) and continue to Yak Kharka. There is a perfect camp site to enjoy the surroundings. We stay there overnight at tent.

Day 14: Yak Kharka-Jomsom ( 2710m./8943ft.) 5 hours walk
We trek to  Jomsom . We descend to the village of Marpha, on the west bank of the Kali Gandaki River. Marpha is home to many apple orchids as well as all the various food products made from fruit. Apple Brandy is a local specialty that you may be lucky enough to taste en route. Continue north, up the river valley to the town of Jomsom. We stay there overnight at lodge .

Day 15-: Jomsom- Pokhara (900m./2970ft.) 25 minutes flight
Fly early morning to Pokhara . You will have wonderful flight to Pokhara as Annapurna and Fishtail will be on left hand side and Dhaulagiri and other snowcapped mountains will be on your right hand side.

Annapurna Conservation Area Project ( ACAP)

The provision of  ACAP is to maintain and build local tourism infrastructure and preserve the nature.  Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP)permit is necessarily required for this trip. It can be obtained from government registered trekking company as Nepal alternative treks & Expeditions.  It's fee is fixed by NTNC Rs. 3000 ( Three thousand rupees) per person. You can not obtain along the entry point, they may return you without carrying ACAP permit. You need passport copy, one passport size photograph and fee in Rs. 3000 ( Three thousand rupees) or equivalent  in cash to apply the permit. This permit you can use only single entry in the area but no limitation of period. It is included in our package. 

Trekker's information Management System ( TIMS)

TIMS is compulsory for Jomsom Trekking. The main aim of TIMS has come into implementation from Jan.2008.  Trekking agency's association of Nepal (TAAN) and Nepal tour tourism board (NTB) has jointly recording the trekker's detail and issuing TIMS for trekkers.

TIMS can be applied through Government registered trekking agency as Nepal alternative treks. TIMS fees are Rs. 2000 for individual trekkers and Rs. 10 00 for organized trekker. Individual TIMS has to be obtained at NTB in Kathmandu and Pokhara yourself . You are required passport copy, one passport size photograph and the amount Rs. 2000 for individual TIMS. You have to applied by Trekking agency if you are joined trekking agency and the amount is Rs. 1000 for company joined in cash. It is included in our package. 

Trekking Clothing equipment for Dhaulagiri round Trekking

When you select your personal items, keep in mind the number of days you will be trekking, the time of year and the altitude. We advise our clients to bring these items:

- Lightweight walking boots "walked" them in prior to arrival in Nepal to avoid blisters. 
- Light weight pants, shorts
- At night -track top, pants 
-  T-shirts. 
- Long sleeve shirt, if susceptible to sunburn. 
- Sun hat - sunburn is severe at rarefied altitudes. 
- Thick outer wooden socks, thin inner cotton 
- Vaseline for feet and crutch.
- Water bottle - 2 liters.
- Sunglasses and strap 
- Small headlamp/flashlight /torch
- Personal medical supplies - do not forget ban - aids, elastic bandage 
- Sunscreen, sun bock, sun - tan lotion. 
- Small daypack - 25 liters. 
- Wind proof jacket  and rain jacket - poncho style to cover backpack.

What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) ?

Acute mountain sickness is an illness that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, usually above 8,000 feet (2,400 meters). The highest point is french pass which is elevated at 5360 meter. If you be precautious about high altitude and follow our guide then you can avoid it. 

How do we know if I get AMS ?

Your symptoms will also depend on the speed of your climb and how hard you push (exert) yourself. Symptoms are as below:

  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Tiredness
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Rapid pulse (heart rate)
  • shortness of breath with exertion
  • Cannot walk in a straight line

Treatment 

  1. Rest, Rest , Rest
  2. Go down, down, down
  3. Diamox

Diamox may be given to help you breathe better. It can help reduce mild symptoms. This medicine can make you urinate more often. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids and avoid alcohol when taking this drug. This medication works best when taken before reaching a high altitude.

Prevention and pre-cautious 

Keys to preventing acute mountain sickness include:

  • Climb the mountain gradually and slowly
  • Sleep at a lower altitude when possible
  • Learn how to recognize early symptoms of mountain sickness
  • Drink plenty of fluid – 3 liters per day
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Eat regular meals, high in carbohydrates
  • Sleep well
  • Be well equipped

First aid

Owing to a sudden change in climate, altitude and other factors, it is obvious that there could arise some alterations in your health. It would be hard to know all aspects of Nepal's health problems.You will be eating and drinking in various outlets. Diarrhea is a common illness that a tourist would be facing. So, it is recommended to drink purified water and eat in clean outlets. Drinking and eating precautions will surely help to take care of many health problems that could arise during the trip. Staying hydrated during the travel, trekking, tours is highly recommended too. If any problem should arise during the trip. Being on good health before leaving for a trip would help you to enjoy your trip to the fullest.Though Nepal alternative treks will be carrying first aid medical kid, you are also suggested to take personal basic first medicines for in case.

Accommodation

We will leave you free to choose hotel in Kathmandu and Pokhara as there will be various choices. We will arrange two men northface tents during the trek. We will arrange shared washing room and toilet.

Meals

During our trek, our professional cook will serve varities of foods each day. Threre will be provided breakfast, lunch and dinner three times along the route with desert and tea/coffee .

Physical Condition & Experience Requirements

Dhaulagiri round is hard level of trek,  suitable for passionate walkers who have the ability to walk at least 5-6 hours a day with a light rucksack. As we will  get the highest elevation 5316 meter, you are preferred an excellent health with average physical fitness, have a positive attitude and strong determination, we can accomplish the trek successfully. Exercising and jogging regularly is good idea to enhance our strength and stability. Past hiking experience would be an asset but no technical skill is required for this trip. Participants with pre-existing medical conditions such as heart, lung, and blood diseases should inform Nepal alternative treks before booking the trek.
